Current product design and manufacturing systems (PDMS) have embraced perception technology with excellent performance, such as recognizing objects from sketches and recognizing objects in assembly process. The next step is enhancing the cognitive capability of PDMS, i.e. the capability of understanding, reasoning and learning design and manufacturing information/knowledge. Given a task or object, a cognitive PDMS should know “what-it-is”, “what-I-can-do” and “how-to-do”.
